Ms. Lisa Lande, Ph.D -Speaker
Lisa Lande, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist with decades of experience in commercial, high-hazard, and the government sectors. Dr. Lande helps organizations worldwide establish coherence between their technical and ecological functions in order to comprehensively optimize safety and performance. She has coached, consulted, and trained nuclear, scientific, and commercial industry executives and leaders around the world for over two decades, facilitating broad-based safety, culture, and performance change. Dr. Lande is skilled at facilitating open and candid dialogue, forging trusting collaborative relationships and alliances, and systematically considering change through a broad-based socio(human)-technological-ecological systems (STES) perspective. As an innovative program and workshop developer, Dr. Lande has led numerous safety culture and leadership development initiatives within Los Alamos National Laboratory and across the Department of Energy. She has worked around the globe - in North and South America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific - and continues to influence broad-based and cooperative change efforts internationally. As illustration of her world-wide impact, Dr. Lande was recently identified as one of 2020's ten top influencers in health and safety by the HSE People. She is an enthusiastic writer and speaker who has published dozens of articles and papers and delivered hundreds of presentations and workshops, also around the globe. She is currently co-host of "The Safety View", a diverse cooperative of shared voices striving to create a meaningful understanding of safety within today's context. Dr. Lande is well networked on social media platforms, and is an active member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychologists (SIOP), the Association for Psychological Science (APS), and the Resilience Engineering Association (REA). She has worked with some of the finest institutions in the world, including the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA), Department of Energy (DOE), National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Port Authority of New Jersey, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Hewlett Packard, Sun Microsystems, Agilent Technologies, Novartis, Goldman-Sachs, JP Morgan, and Dean-Witter.

keynote Session 9: Safety, in Context: The Dual Face of Resilience
In light of recent and significant events that have ushered in incredible uncertainty - most notably Covid-19 and its broad-reaching impacts – humans and organizations alike are confronted with the reality that not all events can be anticipated or controlled in a linear fashion (e.g., technological resilience). Within a technological system, the primary paradigm applied within most organizations and certainly highly regulatory ones where order is the business of the day, uncertainty is anathema. In contrast, however, within an ecological system where living organisms survive and thrive, uncertainty actually stimulates progress and change. Here, humans and other eco-systems adapt in the face of the unknown, creating success paths in a non-linear manner (e.g., ecological resilience). In this brief presentation, Dr. Lande distinguishes between these two systems, their distinctly different approaches to realizing safety and performing resiliently, and how both must be explicitly considered and nurtured within the organization if we are to comprehensive approach safety and optimize performance.
Dr. Lande builds a compelling case for the explicit application of a dual-system paradigm within the organization. She purports that a safety and performance gestalt is realized when organizations effectively link mental/emotional well-being, effectively with operational/financial well-being.
